Veteran Israeli actress Rivka Michaeli, one of the country's most iconic cultural figures, has become an increasingly vocal critic of the Israeli government. In a recent interview with Maariv, the 87-year-old performer stated that if she were living in Europe today, she would join protests against Israel. “Of course I would protest,” she said. “Anti-Israel sentiment around the world is justified.”

Michaeli, who rose to fame over decades of work in film, television, and theater, has emerged as a prominent voice in the wave of public demonstrations opposing the government's controversial judicial overhaul. Since the October 7 Hamas attack and the subsequent war in Gaza, she has also taken part in protests calling for the release of Israeli hostages held in Gaza.

In the interview, Michaeli addressed various political developments, including the appointment of MK Malbitsky as chair of the Knesset Finance Committee amid serious allegations against him. “It’s a disgrace to the Jewish people and the State of Israel that a man accused of rape is selected for such a public role,” she declared.

Reflecting on her motivations for activism, Michaeli said her actions stem from a desire to ensure a better future for the next generations. “I’m already old, and I hope to die soon,” she said with stark honesty. “But I’m deeply worried about the kind of country we’re leaving behind.”

When asked whether she believes that protests are effective, Michaeli responded with conviction: “In the end, they must make a difference.”

Though her statements have sparked backlash from some political circles, Michaeli remains steadfast in her stance. Her willingness to voice unpopular opinions has further cemented her status as one of Israel’s most fearless cultural icons.
