New York’s Jewish community is reeling from the tragic loss of two prominent figures, Wesley LePatner and Julia Hyman, among four victims killed in a mass shooting on July 28, 2025, at 345 Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan. LePatner, 43, a senior executive at Blackstone Inc. and global head of Core+ Real Estate, was a devoted philanthropist, serving on the boards of UJA-Federation of New York and The Heschel School, where she earned the 2023 Alan C. Greenberg Young Leadership Award. A regular at Altneu synagogue, she leaves behind her husband, Evan, and two children. “Her loss is immeasurable,” a UJA-Federation board member said. “Wesley was not just a leader in business and philanthropy, she was a friend, a mother, and a force for good in this world.”

Julia Hyman, 27, a 2020 Cornell University School of Hotel Administration graduate, was an associate at Rudin Management, which owns the building. Tamura, the 27-year-old gunman from Las Vegas, mistakenly exited the elevator on Rudin’s 33rd floor, fatally shooting Hyman. A Riverdale Country School alumna, Hyman had interned at Newmark and worked at Sagehall before joining Rudin in November 2024. Rudin Management stated, “The Rudin family and everyone at our company are devastated by yesterday’s senseless tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with those injured and lost, including our cherished Rudin colleague.” Cornell’s dean, Kate Walsh, added, “Julia’s brilliance and warmth left an indelible mark on our community.”

The attack, which also killed NYPD officer Didarul Islam, 36, and security guard Aland Etienne, occurred at 5:40 p.m., with Tamura injuring an NFL employee before dying by suicide. Mayor Eric Adams noted a note referencing chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), stating, “We’re still investigating, this is relatively new. There’s no more than just a note at this time, and as you indicated, he talked about CTE.” The NYPD and FBI are probing Tamura’s motives, with no clear link to the Jewish victims yet established. Social media on X mourned, with one user posting, “Wesley and Julia’s deaths are a devastating blow to NYC’s Jewish community.”
