Tyler Robinson, the 22-year-old accused of murdering conservative activist Charlie Kirk, has been charged with aggravated murder, a capital offense in Utah. Utah County Attorney Jeff Gray confirmed that the state will be seeking the death penalty in the case. Gray stated at a press conference that he is committed to "bringing justice for Charlie Kirk" and that the decision to pursue a capital sentence was made "independently," based "solely on the available evidence and circumstances and nature of the crime."

In total, Robinson has been charged with seven crimes. The most severe is Count 1: Aggravated Murder, for intentionally and knowingly causing the death of Kirk under circumstances that risked the lives of others. The second count is Felony Discharge of a Firearm, a first-degree felony.

The prosecution also alleges two key aggravating factors that make the case eligible for the death penalty. The first is that Robinson is believed to have targeted Kirk "based on Charlie Kirk's political expression." The second is that the crime was committed "knowing that children were present and would witness the homicide."

Beyond the murder charge, the state has also filed charges for an alleged cover-up. Robinson faces two counts of Obstruction of Justice for moving and concealing the rifle used in the shooting and for disposing of the clothing he wore. He is also charged with two counts of Witness Tampering for allegedly directing his roommate to delete incriminating texts and to stay silent if questioned by police. The final charge is a Class A misdemeanor for the commission of a violent offense in the presence of a child.

Gray confirmed that because of the decision to seek the death penalty, Robinson will continue to be held without bail in the Utah County Jail.
