Germany Approves Massive Purchase of Israeli Weapons Despite Arms Embargo
Germany defies embargo, purchasing 90 advanced Litening 5 targeting pods from Israel for Eurofighter jets, showing deep military cooperation and cutting-edge sensor capabilities despite international restrictions.

The German Parliament has approved the acquisition of 90 Litening 5 targeting and surveillance pods from Israeli defense firm Rafael Advanced Defense Systems for the Bundeswehr's Eurofighter Typhoon jets, despite an arms embargo on Israel.
The Litening 5, a fifth-generation system for aerial-to-ground targeting and surveillance, is in service with 28 air forces worldwide. Over 2,000 units have been delivered, logging more than 2.2 million operational flight hours, making it one of the most widely used Targeting Pod (TGP) systems globally.
The Litening 5 features infrared imaging in short- and medium-wave bands, high-resolution color imaging, and dual-band laser designation. Its modular design ensures compatibility with over 26 aircraft platforms, including the F-15, F-16, Gripen, A-10, Mirage 2000, Embraer, and Eurofighter. The system supports laser-, GPS-, and image-guided munitions and includes data link connectivity across Ku, C, and L frequency bands.
Germany's decision follows its earlier acquisition of the Litening 3 model. Opting for the advanced Litening 5 reflects satisfaction with Rafael’s proven system, emphasizing precision, survivability, and future adaptability.
An extended configuration, Litening+SAR, integrates advanced optical and thermal imaging with Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), enabling wide-area scanning in all weather conditions, including maritime environments.
The Litening pod is used by hundreds of aircraft, including those of the Israeli Air Force. It's the world’s most sought-after system of its kind, combining proven operational performance, modularity, and mission flexibility. Valued at approximately 350 million euros, the deal reinforces Israel’s leadership in advanced aerial observation and targeting systems amid evolving geopolitical dynamics.
