A 16-year-old girl from northern Israel credits artificial intelligence with helping save her life after she turned to ChatGPT for advice upon discovering a mysterious lump in her abdomen. The teen, concerned by the abnormal sensation and unsure of what it could mean, described her symptoms to the AI chatbot. In response, ChatGPT asked her a series of follow-up questions, assessed her inputs, and recommended that she undergo blood tests and an abdominal ultrasound.
Following this advice, the girl consulted a medical professional and underwent an ultrasound, which revealed a large and rare mass located on her pancreas. She was urgently referred to Schneider Children’s Medical Center in Petah Tikva, where doctors determined that immediate surgery was necessary. She subsequently underwent a complex Whipple procedure, a high-risk surgical operation typically used to remove tumors in the pancreas and surrounding structures.
Though the mass was ultimately found to be benign, doctors noted that had it not been identified and removed in time, it could have led to life-threatening complications. The case is now being hailed as a striking example of how the combination of personal health awareness, AI-based guidance, and timely medical intervention can intersect to save lives.
