The United Nations General Assembly has passed a resolution advancing Palestinian statehood, delivering what many are calling a significant diplomatic blow to Israel. In a vote of 142-10, the assembly endorsed the "New York Declaration," a document calling for concrete steps toward a Palestinian state without the involvement of Hamas.

The vote highlighted Israel’s shrinking diplomatic backing, as support for the measure crossed traditional alliance lines. Every Gulf state voted in favor, as did NATO members like Turkey and Norway, along with most European Union countries. Predictably, China, Russia, Iran, and Syria also backed the resolution. In contrast, only ten countries voted with the United States to oppose the declaration, a group that included Hungary and Argentina, as well as smaller nations like Micronesia, Nauru, and Paraguay.

U.S. diplomat Morgan Ortagus condemned the resolution, calling it "a gift to Hamas" that would "prolong the war, embolden Hamas and harm the prospects of peace." Similarly, Israeli Ambassador Danny Danon delivered a blistering response, calling the vote "not diplomacy" but "theatre." He declared that when "terrorists are the ones cheering, you are not advancing peace; you are advancing terror."

However, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot offered a different perspective, arguing that the resolution actually achieved Hamas's "international isolation" by condemning the group's crimes and demanding its disarmament.

The vote’s outcome raises questions about what comes next. The renewed diplomatic pressure is set to escalate on September 22, when Britain, France, Canada, Australia, and Belgium plan to formally recognize a Palestinian state during the UN General Assembly's annual gathering. This move would represent the biggest diplomatic break with Israel by Western nations since the Oslo Accords.
