BREAKING: Hefin David, Welsh Labour Member of the Senedd, Dies Unexpectedly at 47
Welsh Labour politician Hefin David, who served as Member of the Senedd for Caerphilly since 2016, has passed away suddenly at age 47, leaving behind a legacy of public service.

First Minister and Welsh Labour leader Eluned Morgan paid tribute, calling David an “outstanding politician” whose contributions would be “greatly missed.”
“We are extremely saddened by the sudden death of Hefin,” Morgan said. “Our thoughts are with his family at this terrible time. He served Caerphilly as a councillor and a Member of the Senedd with pride and passion. Hefin was warm, enthusiastic, and a gifted communicator, particularly on behalf of his constituents.”
David’s partner, Cynon Valley MS Vikki Howells, serves as the minister for further and higher education in the Welsh Labour government.

Born and raised in Caerphilly, David had a longstanding commitment to his community and public service.
David's political career began in 2007 when he was elected to Caerphilly County Borough Council, representing the St Cattwg ward. He served on the council until 2017, during which he chaired the Policy and Resources Scrutiny Committee. In 2016, he was elected as a Member of the Senedd for Caerphilly, succeeding Jeff Cuthbert. David was re-elected in 2021 with a significant majority.
Throughout his tenure, David focused on issues such as small business development, employment, and access to education for individuals with additional learning needs. He also advocated for the development of Valleys communities and supported families with relatives who have autism. David was a member of several cross-party groups, including those on universities, autism, and long-COVID.
Throughout his career, David was recognized for his dedication to public service and his deep connection to the communities he represented. His sudden passing has prompted an outpouring of condolences across the political spectrum, reflecting the impact he made both inside and outside the Senedd.
