Yesterday, June 22, 2025, at 11:05 PM IDT, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem issued a National Terrorism Advisory System (NTAS) Bulletin, warning of a “heightened threat environment” across the United States due to the escalating Israel-Iran war, which intensified with U.S. airstrikes on Iranian nuclear sites on June 21. The bulletin, effective until September 22, 2025, at 11:59 PM ET, highlights the risk of cyberattacks and potential violent acts driven by Iran’s retaliatory motives and anti-Semitic sentiments. “It is our duty to keep the nation safe and informed, especially during times of war,” Noem stated, emphasizing the need for vigilance.

The alert specifies that “low-level cyber attacks against US networks by pro-Iranian hacktivists are likely,” with more sophisticated attacks possible from cyber actors linked to the Iranian government. These groups have a history of targeting critical infrastructure, such as water systems and energy grids, exploiting poorly secured networks. Iran’s ongoing intent to target U.S. government officials, stemming from the 2020 killing of General Qassem Soleimani, adds to the concern. The bulletin warns that “the likelihood of violent extremists in the Homeland independently mobilizing to violence” could surge if Iranian leadership issues a religious ruling, or fatwa, calling for attacks on U.S. soil.

Recent domestic terrorist incidents fueled by anti-Semitic or anti-Israel sentiment underscore the risk of further attacks, particularly against Jewish or pro-Israel targets. The war has also prompted statements from groups like Hamas and Hezbollah, urging violence against U.S. interests. New York Governor Kathy Hochul responded, saying, “My top priority is the safety of New Yorkers,” and confirmed increased security measures, though “no specific or credible threat” exists. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) is promoting best practices to secure networks, while the public is urged to report suspicious activity to local authorities or FBI Field Offices.
