French President Emmanuel Macron spoke this evening (Sunday) with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, for the first time since the end of the war last week. In the conversation, Macron reiterated his demands to Iran, and called on them to maintain the ceasefire with Israel.

In a statement he published on social media, Macron said he asked Pezeshkian "to release our citizens Cécile Kohler and Jacques Paris, and to protect our citizens and facilities in Iran. They must not be exposed to any threats." He also called on Iran: "Maintain the ceasefire, in order to help restore peace to the Middle East."

Macron added that he asked Iran "to return to the negotiating table to discuss and address nuclear and ballistic missile issues, to maintain the framework of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, and to quickly resume the work of the International Atomic Energy Agency in Iran in order to ensure full transparency." "I will continue to work in the coming days to achieve these goals," Macron committed to the public in concluding his remarks.
