US in "close contact" with South Korea following martial law declaration
Following South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol's declaration of martial law, a spokesperson for the US National Security Council said the White House was monitoring the situation "closely."
A spokesperson for the American National Security Council told The Korea Times that the United States is "closely" monitoring the situation in South Korea following the declaration of martial law in the country late today (Tuesday). They also said they are in contact with the South Korean government.
South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law earlier today to fight what he called "anti-state" and subversive elements within the country, especially among the opposition parties and those he accused of sympathy with North Korea.
The Martial Law Command established in the wake of his order has declared all political activity banned and media and publishers to be placed under military control. Strikes and protests are also banned throughout the country.
