A shocking incident at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport has left the world reeling after a 31-year-old Belarusian man, Vladimir Vitkov, was arrested for the attempted murder of an 18-month-old Iranian refugee toddler. The unprovoked attack occurred on June 24, 2025, mere minutes after the child, identified as Yazdan, and his pregnant mother arrived, fleeing the escalating violence in Iran following the outbreak of war with Israel on June 13.

The Attack Unfolds

Video evidence captured the horrifying moment when Vitkov, recently fired from a nuclear power plant construction job in Egypt after failing a drug and alcohol test, picked up Yazdan by the ankle and hurled him head-first onto the hard airport floor. The footage shows Vitkov assuming a fighting stance and donning sunglasses before bystanders intervened, subduing him until Russian police arrived. The toddler suffered severe skull and spinal injuries, leading to his placement in a medically induced coma. However, doctors have reported a glimmer of hope, noting that his brain was not damaged and neurosurgical treatment will not be required, according to the Daily Mirror.

A Confession and Condemnation

Vitkov, who was returning home through Moscow, reportedly confessed during interrogation, stating, “I tried to murder a child.” Russian authorities confirmed he was under the influence of drugs and alcohol at the time, with traces of cannabis found in his system and additional narcotics discovered on his person. Ksenia Mishonova, the Moscow regional children’s ombudswoman, branded him a “drug-addled monster,” demanding he face “hard labor until he is feeble with old age” as punishment. The Russian Investigative Committee has charged Vitkov with attempted murder, and the case has infuriated millions of people.

Context and Controversy

The attack comes amid a mass exodus from Iran, where thousands have fled the recent conflict with Israel. Iran’s alliance with Russia, including the supply of ballistic missiles and drone technology used against Ukraine, adds a geopolitical layer to the tragedy. Yazdan and his mother had endured a perilous journey through Afghanistan before reaching Russia, seeking safety only to encounter this brutal assault.

Adding to the incident’s complexity, online narratives have falsely labeled Vitkov as Israeli, a claim unsupported by any official evidence. Posts on X and various web sources have fueled this speculation, with some attributing the attack to ethnic or political motives tied to the Israel-Iran conflict.

However, Russian authorities and investigative reports consistently identify Vitkov as a Belarusian citizen, with no indication of Israeli nationality or affiliation.
