The Time Has Come: President Trump Must Save Us From Ourselves

When the Prime Minister, Mossad chief, and military brass must plead with judges mid-war, the problem isn’t Netanyahu, it’s the system.

The spectacle mistakenly called the “Netanyahu Trial” has crossed every imaginable line of absurdity. Even Franz Kafka, the Jewish author from Prague whose writings famously critiqued bureaucratic oppression, would be dizzy with disbelief watching what is unfolding. This is no longer just about Netanyahu. It is larger than him and even larger than the State of Israel. Someone must save us from ourselves, and that someone, it seems, is President Donald Trump.

Today, the heads of the Mossad, Military Intelligence (AMAN), the Shin Bet, and the Prime Minister all gathered in one location. But it was not a military bunker or a war room in Southern Command. It was a courtroom.

Pause and consider that. Whether you support Netanyahu or oppose him, whether you favor judicial reform or not, none of that matters. During a prolonged war, one that has spanned nearly two years and involves at least five fronts, the entire upper echelon of Israel’s security establishment stopped what they were doing to appear in court. Their purpose was to convince a group of judges to allow the Prime Minister to continue managing national security for one more week.

Even Kafka did not imagine this.

Israel is turning against itself. This cannot continue.

The judiciary today behaves less like a branch of democratic governance and more like a royal oligarchy. It sees itself as the ultimate authority over the country and the moral compass that guides it. In monarchies, the king cannot admit fault. A king who confesses to error ceases to be king. The Israeli legal system operates in the same fashion. It insists on total control in every matter, whether it concerns judicial appointments, legal oversight, the identity of the Supreme Court president, or even a simple postponement of two weeks in Netanyahu’s trial.

This rigidity is not about principle. It is about control.

Israel has attempted to break free from this structure. Protesters filled the streets. Military units were shaken. Air force squadrons stood down. As in any entrenched regime, there are always elites who benefit from the system and will fight to preserve it.

Perhaps, as in critical moments throughout history, change will require outside help.

President Donald Trump is in a unique position to offer that help. His influence both inside and outside Israel is real. He could help Israel strengthen its democracy, not by favoring one branch over another, but by restoring power to the people.

If Israel remains passive, repeating the mantra of national sovereignty while institutions run unchecked, then the current regime will remain intact. Blind patriotism will only help it endure.

When Israel joined the OECD, it was asked to reform the role of the Attorney General. The United States waived that requirement. Today, we are living with the consequences.

It is time to fix the mistake.

It is time to turn to the United States, not to rescue a single leader, but to help return true sovereignty to the people of Israel.
