In a major leap for tactical UAV technology, Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) this week unveiled the APUS 25, a revolutionary vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) drone that offers unmatched endurance, payload capacity, and operational flexibility.

Unlike conventional electric drones, the APUS 25 is powered by a central internal combustion engine running at fixed RPM, which drives four rotors via a patented variable-speed mechanism. This enables a remarkable flight time of up to 8 continuous hours.

The drone can operate at altitudes of up to 11,000 feet, withstand wind speeds of up to 23 knots, and carry a payload of up to 10 kilograms. Its multi-fuel capability allows use of Jet-A1, JP5, JP8, and even standard gasoline — a major logistical advantage in the field.

Co-Developed with Aerotor

The APUS 25 was co-developed by IAI and Aerotor Unmanned Systems, in which IAI recently acquired a strategic stake. The drone debuted at Underwater Defence Technology (UDT) 2024 in London, drawing strong interest from global security experts.

Its VTOL design enables operations from diverse surfaces, removing the need for traditional runways and dramatically expanding tactical deployment options, including in maritime environments.

Strategic and Operational Impact

Compared to standard electric multirotor drones, the APUS 25 vastly improves endurance and payload capacity — two of the main constraints in modern UAV design. Its internal combustion system supports longer missions and heavier sensor packages, essential for tactical ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance).

It also delivers 300 watts of continuous power to onboard systems, enabling use of advanced intelligence and sensor suites. A variable-pitch rotor mechanism improves flight efficiency and stability, particularly in high-wind conditions.

Redefining the Tactical UAV Battlefield

With rapid deployment, long-range surveillance, and multi-environment adaptability, the APUS 25 offers ground forces immediate aerial support — without depending on traditional air force assets.

IAI’s innovation positions the APUS 25 at the forefront of unmanned aerial warfare, delivering the agility, endurance, and autonomy demanded by modern battlefield scenarios.
