The Irish post-punk band Fontaines DC headlined a sold-out concert at Finsbury Park last night (Saturday) drawing an audience of 45,000. However, the event, intended as a celebration of their music, was overshadowed by overt anti-Israel sentiments expressed during the performance.

Palestinian flags were prominently displayed on stage equipment, and large screens flanking the performance area repeatedly flashed the message “Free Palestine” in the band’s distinctive gothic font during several songs. Lead singer Grian Chatten, known for his sparse commentary between tracks, dedicated one song to his “little girl,” but engaged with the crowd’s chants of “free Palestine,” amplifying the anti-Israel rhetoric. During the performance of “I Love You,” the screens transitioned from vintage-style footage to display Hamas propaganda messages as Chatten sang lyrics alluding to “selling genocide and half-cut pride.”

Prior to Fontaines DC’s set, Chatten joined the supporting act Kneecap for their collaboration “Better Way To Live.” Dressed in a silver jacket and glasses, he enthusiastically participated, shouting “Free Palestine” during the joint performance. Australian rock band Amyl and the Sniffers also opened the event.

As the main set concluded, the screens displayed a parting message: “Israel is committing genocide. Use your voice.” Chatten offered a brief “cheers London, thank you very much,” before waving goodbye and leaving the stage.

The concert’s political undertones have sparked debate, with the band’s actions drawing attention away from their musical performance and focusing on the contentious issue of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
