Dr. Martin Sherman is the founder and Executive Director of the Israel Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS). He served for seven years in operational capacities within Israel’s defense establishment and later as a ministerial adviser in the government of Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir. He was the first Academic Director of the prestigious Herzliya Conference and a long-time advocate for Israel’s national security interests in both academic and policy arenas. For over 20 years, Dr. Sherman lectured at Tel Aviv University, specializing in Political Science, International Relations, and Strategic Studies. He has published extensively on issues of security, diplomacy, and the Israeli–Palestinian conflict. Born in South Africa, Dr. Sherman immigrated to Israel in 1971. He holds a B.Sc. in Physics and Geology, an MBA in Finance, and a Ph.D. in Political Science and International Relations.
