OpenAI has officially launched GPT-5, the next generation of its flagship language model, bringing with it smarter responses and greater task-handling capabilities. While not a groundbreaking leap forward, GPT-5 sets a new standard for general-purpose AI, evolving ChatGPT from a conversational tool into a true task-performing assistant.

According to OpenAI, GPT-5 is the first unified model of its kind. It merges the inference strength of the “o” model family with the speed and fluidity of GPT models. The result? A bot that not only answers questions and generates anime art from prompts, but also writes code, schedules calendars, drafts full research papers, and adapts intelligently without the need for users to tweak settings.

A New Default for All Users

For the first time, free-tier users will also gain access to the advanced model by default. OpenAI's VP of ChatGPT, Nick Turley, called this part of the company’s broader effort to ensure its technology “reaches everyone.”

CEO Sam Altman praised GPT-5 as a major step toward Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), though he clarified that this version is not yet AGI. Instead, he described it as a significant advance, one that would have been “unimaginable in any other era.”

Outperforming Rivals (In Some Areas)

Internal benchmarks released by OpenAI show that GPT-5 outperforms key competitors like Anthropic’s Claude, Google’s Gemini, and xAI’s Grok, though not across the board.

Fewer Hallucinations, More Transparency

One of the most notable improvements in GPT-5 is its reduction of hallucinations, fabricated or incorrect information. Only 4.8% of its responses contained such errors, compared to nearly 20% in earlier models like GPT-4o and o3.

OpenAI’s Head of Safety, Alex Beutel, said the model is also significantly better at detecting potentially dangerous requests, leading to fewer false refusals of innocent questions, and better filtering of harmful prompts.

Personalized Chatbot Modes

In a move seemingly inspired by Elon Musk’s Grok personalities, OpenAI has introduced four chatbot personas: the Cynic, the Robot, the Attentive Listener, and the Nerd. The full extent of their behavioral differences is still being explored.

Pricing, Access, and Developer Tools

GPT-5 follows a busy week for OpenAI, which also released its open-source model gpt-oss. While GPT-5 may not be the long-awaited leap toward AGI, it is a robust enhancement that reinforces OpenAI’s dominance in the AI landscape.

The real test will come not in benchmarks but in the real world, once millions begin to put GPT-5 through its paces.
