U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio voiced serious concern on Wednesday over recent Israeli airstrikes in Syria, as well as intensifying clashes between Syrian regime forces and local Druze groups in the country’s south.

Speaking to reporters, Rubio said he had just concluded calls with key parties involved and confirmed that the United States is “very concerned about the situation.” His remarks come amid reports of Israeli strikes in central Damascus and renewed fighting despite a temporary ceasefire.

“We hope to provide more updates by the end of the day, but at this point we are very concerned,” Rubio stated.

He emphasized that Washington is actively engaging with all relevant sides in hopes of bringing the hostilities to an end. “We want the fighting to stop. We’re talking to all the stakeholders involved and hope we can bring this to a conclusion. We are very concerned about the developments,” he reiterated.

Meanwhile, Axios journalist Barak Ravid reported that the United States has conveyed a clear message to Israel, urging it to halt its military actions against the newly reconstituted Syrian government.
