Former U.S. President Bill Clinton, speaking today (Saturday), called for urgent efforts to defuse the escalating Israel-Iran war, criticizing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s motives and highlighting the devastating civilian toll. In remarks made during a public event, Clinton suggested that Netanyahu’s aggressive stance against Iran is partly driven by a desire to remain in power, stating, “Mr. Netanyahu has long wanted to fight Iran, because that way he can stay in office forever and ever.”

Clinton urged de-escalation, expressing hope that President Donald Trump and other leaders would work to calm the situation. “I think we should be trying to diffuse it, and I hope President Trump will do that. I hope anybody there will do that,” he said. He emphasized U.S. support for its Middle East allies, adding, “We gotta convince our friends in the Middle East that we’ll stand with them and try to protect them.” However, Clinton strongly condemned the targeting of civilians, stating, “Choosing undeclared wars in which the primary victims are civilians who are not politically involved one way or the other, just wanna live decent lives, is not a very good solution.”

Reflecting on his own presidency, Clinton underscored the importance of preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, noting, “Do I think that we have to try to stop Iran from having a nuclear weapon? I do. I tried at that, and we had some success.” He cautioned against actions that lead to “constant killing of civilians who can’t defend themselves and just want a chance to live,” advocating for diplomatic solutions over military escalation.
