MK Yuli Edelstein, Chairman of the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, gave a press conference today (Tuesday) defending his role in the preparation of the draft law, saying that he operated based on principles all sides agreed to.

Edelstein said that his primary concern was and remains the regular and reservist IDF soldiers fighting Israel's wars for the last year and a half, and whose voices Edelstein listened to throughout the year.

Edelstein also said that a draft law without effective personal sanctions, institutional sanctions for failing to meet quotas, a rapid increase in the number of those serving, and effective oversight and surveillance, the law will not be a law but a "bluff" he refuses to sanction.

Countering claims by Shas that Edelstein was making the draft law impossible to bring down the government, Edelstein said that he did everything possible to avoid bringing down the government, and that he will not run in any party save Likud in the next elections.
