Edelstein: Haredi MKs are lying about the draft law proposal
MK Yuli Edelstein, who is currently being blamed for the collapse of the coalition, says that Haredi MKs are distorting what he did with the draft law proposal.
Sources close to MK Yuli Edelstein, the Chairman of the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, told Channel 14 that Haredi MKs are mischaracterizing his proposed draft law:
"Edelstein tried with all his strength to preserve the government and coalition. He said throughout the entire process that he would only produce under his hand a real draft law that would provide a solution.
"Contrary to claims, there was no 'disruptive' demand in the draft law for which the Haredim needed to slam doors.
"Regarding the demand for fingerprinting in yeshivas, sources close to Edelstein say: if Yuli is giving exemption from military service due to Torah study - he must ensure there is real supervision and that Torah is indeed being studied. Edelstein offered to hear other solutions but Haredi representatives did not respond.
"The understandings on the eve of the attack on Iran were to preserve the coalition for now, but immediately after the end of 'Operation Days of Repentance' the Haredim returned to boycotting votes, threatening and briefing. One really needs to check who stood by their word and who went back on the understandings.
"The ball and responsibility are now in the Haredim's court."
