Israeli police deployed a water cannon and arrested seven demonstrators on Sunday as families and supporters of Israelis held hostage in Gaza blocked a major tunnel in the capital. The protest, part of a nationwide strike demanding government action for the release of hostages captured during the October 7, 2023 attack, briefly paralyzed traffic in a key entry point to Jerusalem.

Officers dragged demonstrators from the pavement after dousing them with water, forcing the crowd to disperse. Protesters have since continued their march along Route 16 toward Azza Street, home to the Prime Minister’s residence.

One detained demonstrator, encircled by plainclothes officers, told reporters: “Arrest me, but the protest movement will continue.”

Police confirmed that, earlier in the day, 25 individuals were arrested at related protests across the country. The demonstrations are being staged not only to demand the safe return of the 50 hostages still held in Gaza but also in opposition to the government’s plan to occupy Gaza City.

The protest has drawn widespread attention as thousands across Israel participate in the strike, highlighting mounting frustration among families of hostages and supporters calling for urgent action.
