How a Fallen IDF Hero Freed His Soldier and Saved Two Children
IDF Commander Rei Biran's Heartfelt Letter Secures Presidential Pardon for Golani Soldier: "Even in his death, he gave life."

In a heartfelt act of compassion, Yonatan Hayon, a distinguished soldier from the Golani Brigade’s reconnaissance unit, was granted a presidential pardon today by President Yitzhak Herzog, following a poignant letter penned by his late commander, Capt. Rei Biran, before his death in combat. The letter, uncovered after Biran’s passing, passionately advocated for erasing Hayon’s criminal record, a minor weapons charge from his youth, praising his “exceptional moral qualities” and leadership.
Hayon, who served with unwavering commitment in Gaza, had been burdened by the lingering record. Biran’s letter highlighted his soldier’s character: “Beyond his professional skills as a fighter, Yonatan is a social leader, always supporting his team and ready to help.” The emotional appeal, described as a “testament” by Biran’s mother, Tali, led to Hayon’s pardon, freeing him from the legal shadow that followed his service.
Speaking on Story Layla, Tali Biran shared her shock at discovering the letter: “Rei always believed in unity, saying, ‘We are one for each other.’ This letter, his will, gave life to his soldier even in death.”
Biran’s legacy extends beyond the pardon. His donated corneas restored sight to two children after his death. Tali noted, “In life and after, Rei gave life to others.” Yaakov, grandfather of one recipient, expressed gratitude: “After two failed transplants, Rei’s corneas brought light to my grandson. This is true nobility.” Yaakov, who founded Matnat Chaim after losing two sons, called it a “circle of kindness.”
