In response to the devastating October 7, 2023, Hamas attack that killed 1,200 Israelis and abducted 251, the Israel Defense Forces’ Intelligence Directorate is overhauling its training to mandate Arabic language and Islamic cultural studies for all personnel, including cyber and tech specialists. This sweeping reform, announced today aims to enhance understanding of regional adversaries and prevent future intelligence failures. The initiative, reported by IDF Radio, will establish a dedicated department to teach Arabic and Islam, ensuring that every brigade and division intelligence officer achieves high-level Arabic proficiency and deep cultural insight. The program extends from pre-enlistment education to advanced officer training, with a goal that within a year, 100% of intelligence personnel will study Islam and 50% will learn Arabic.

The IDF is also reviving the Department of Middle Eastern Studies Promotion, shuttered in 2019 due to budget cuts, under Unit 8200. This department will reintroduce programs like the “Middle Eastern Cadet Course” in schools to foster early Arabic and regional studies. Specialized courses in Houthi and Iraqi dialects address challenges like deciphering speech affected by qat, a herb linked to oral health issues, with native instructors enhancing authenticity. A senior intelligence officer stated, “Until today, we were not good enough in culture, language, and Islam. We need to improve in these areas. We cannot transform intelligence soldiers and officers into Arab children who grew up in a village, but through learning the language and culture, we can instill in them critical thinking and deep observation.”

The reforms address gaps exposed by Hamas’s attack, which exploited Israel’s underestimation of its cultural and operational tactics. By integrating these studies, the IDF aims to sharpen its intelligence edge against threats like Hamas, Hezbollah, and Houthi forces, amid ongoing conflicts that have seen 886 IDF fatalities since October 2023. Social media posts on X praise the move, with one user noting, “Understanding the enemy’s mindset is key to stopping terror.”
