During Israel’s Operation Rising Lion, launched June 13, 2025, an Israeli Air Force F-15 fighter jet narrowly escaped catastrophe over Tehran due to a critical fuel system malfunction, a Channel 12 report revealed on July 12, 2025. The pilot, deep in hostile Iranian airspace, detected the failure in the jet’s secondary fuel tank, which prevented fuel access, threatening the mission and risking an emergency landing in enemy territory. The Israeli Air Force command center, known as “the pit,” erupted into action, with officers preparing for a worst-case scenario. “It was a tense moment; we were ready for anything,” an IAF official recalled, as the specter of a downed jet loomed.

In a remarkable feat, a refueling tanker was urgently dispatched, rendezvousing with the F-15 over Iran for a high-stakes mid-air refueling. The operation succeeded, allowing the pilot to complete the mission and return safely. Inside the command bunker, officers reportedly exhaled in relief, “wiping away the cold sweat” after averting disaster. The incident underscored the IAF’s agility, as no refueling was initially planned for the sortie. Contingency plans included a potential emergency landing in a neighboring country, possibly Iraq or Azerbaijan, to avoid capture in Iran.

Adding to the operation’s intensity, Air Force Commander Major General Tomer Bar had warned squadron leaders of grim projections, estimating up to 10 jets could be lost in the first 72 hours due to Iran’s advanced 3rd Khordad air defense system. Baruch Hashem, these fears were unfounded. The IAF’s opening strikes crippled Iran’s air defenses, targeting radar and missile sites, including Natanz and Isfahan nuclear facilities, ensuring no Israeli planes were downed. “Our presence in western Iran is critical. Every launcher we strike saves lives in Israel,” Bar stated. Social media posts on X praised the IAF’s precision, with one user noting, “Israel’s pilots turned Iran’s skies into their playground.” The operation’s success, despite near-disasters, highlights Israel’s aerial dominance amid the 12-day war’s 900 Iranian and 30 Israeli casualties.
