Sgt. Amit Cohen, a 19-year-old Golani Brigade soldier from Holon, died Monday in an explosion during an operation in Khan Younis, southern Gaza Strip, the Israel Defense Forces confirmed. The blast, suspected to have resulted from mishandling explosive materials in the Magan area, also seriously injured a Golani officer, who was rushed to a hospital for treatment. His family has been notified. Cohen’s death marks the 894th IDF soldier killed in combat since the war began.

Cohen, serving in Battalion 13, attended ORT Holon high school, where he studied photography alongside Sgt. Danilo Mokno, a classmate killed two months ago in Khan Younis when a building collapsed. Ynet reported that their teacher, Ilanit, mourned the loss: “Another beloved student gone, from the same class as Danny. Families are shattered, friends devastated. These kids had their whole lives ahead. This war has to end. Amit was tough but had a gentle heart. I’ll always cherish him.” She described both students as bright, respectful, and mature beyond their years, adding, “They truly take the best.”

Ronen Zola, their photography teacher, remembered the close-knit class of 13. “Losing Amit just months after Danilo is unbearable. These young souls were just starting out. Both chose Golani’s combat roles.” Zola noted their yearbook photos show them side by side, with Amit set on serving in the toughest units. “He was a true friend, always there for others. I couldn’t believe he was gone when I heard the news.”

Holon Mayor Shai Keinan paid tribute: “With heavy hearts, we mourn our city’s hero, Sgt. Amit Cohen, just 19. A brave Golani fighter, he fell protecting Israel. His courage and spirit will live on. Holon stands with his family in this painful loss. May his memory be a blessing.” Cohen is survived by his parents, Kfir and Maya, and younger siblings, Gaia and Harel.

The incident occurred as IDF forces began operations in Deir al-Balah, central Gaza, following an evacuation order issued Sunday. Airstrikes and ground attacks preceded the mission. Last week, three tank crew members from Battalion 52, Brigade 401, Sgt. Shaham Menachem, Cpl. Shlomo Yakir Sherem, and Sgt. Yuli Factor, died in a separate Gaza explosion, likely caused by an Israeli shell inside their tank. Investigations ruled out mechanical issues or external attack, confirming the shells were safe. The IDF is probing both incidents and will share findings with the families transparently.
