Suspect in the assassination plot against PM Netanyahu

Disturbing details emerged about a 70-year-old woman from Tel Aviv, a known activist in the Kaplan protest movement, who was arrested for allegedly planning to assassinate Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The suspect, diagnosed with a terminal illness, is expected to face charges on July 24, 2025, for conspiracy to commit murder and terrorism-related offenses. According to the investigation, she chillingly told a fellow activist, “If I’m going to die, I’ll take Bibi to the grave with me,” revealing her intent to kill the prime minister using an explosive device or an RPG. The woman reportedly sought to obtain weapons and inquired about Netanyahu’s security arrangements, contacting other Kaplan activists to gather information.

The plot was uncovered after another activist, Gonen Ben Yitzhak, alerted the Shin Bet, leading to her arrest two weeks ago. She was released on bail with conditions barring her from government institutions and approaching Netanyahu. The investigation, conducted jointly by the Shin Bet and the National Unit for Serious and International Crimes (Lahav 433), revealed her actions were motivated by her terminal diagnosis, which she learned about in June 2025. Social media posts on X reflected shock, with one user stating, “A 70-year-old plotting with an RPG? This is a new level of extremism.” The Kaplan protests, centered in Tel Aviv since 2023, have opposed Netanyahu’s judicial reforms and governance, with over 1,200 demonstrations recorded by July 2025, some turning violent.

This incident follows heightened security concerns, including a June 2025 drone attack near Netanyahu’s Caesarea home, attributed to Hezbollah. The Shin Bet reported a 40% increase in domestic terror threats in 2025, with 320 plots foiled since January. The woman’s case has intensified debates over protest movements, with critics arguing Kaplan’s rhetoric fuels extremism, while supporters claim it reflects legitimate dissent against Netanyahu’s leadership amid ongoing conflicts, including Gaza operations costing 895 Israeli lives.
