Romania is set to become the first European country to acquire Israel’s Iron Dome air and missile defense system, a significant step in bolstering its military capabilities amid growing regional security concerns. In an interview with Romania’s state broadcaster TVR yesterday (Saturday), Defense Minister Ionut Musteano announced that the nation plans to finalize a purchase agreement with Israel this fall.

Musteano emphasized the urgent need for the system, stating, “These are missile defense batteries we currently lack, and they are essential. We’ve seen footage of Tel Aviv under Iranian attack, with Iron Dome in action protecting the city. It will protect us too, safeguarding airports, military bases, and, God forbid, our cities.” The minister’s remarks highlight the system’s proven track record in intercepting rockets and missiles, as demonstrated in Israel’s defense against recent attacks.

The Iron Dome acquisition is part of Romania’s broader military modernization effort. Musteano noted that the 2025 defense budget will also fund additional short-range air defense (SHORAD) missiles and corvette-class warships to enhance the country’s naval capabilities. The move reflects Romania’s strategic push to strengthen its defense posture, particularly in the volatile Black Sea region.

Musteano also addressed Romania’s forthcoming national security policy, set to be unveiled by President Nicosur Dan. The policy will prioritize deepened cooperation with the European Union, the United States, and Turkey in the Black Sea. “There is no Black Sea strategy without Turkey—it’s the strongest player,” Musteano said, adding that discussions and concrete steps on this front will be outlined in the national security strategy.

The announcement marks a milestone for Israel’s defense industry, with Iron Dome, developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, gaining traction as a sought-after technology in Europe. Romania’s adoption could pave the way for other nations to follow, reshaping regional defense dynamics.
