Surprise Resignation in the Knesset: Why This Shas MK Just Gave Up His Seat
Shas MK Avraham Betzalel resigned from the Knesset to allow MK Yonatan Mishriki to retain his seat and continue leading the influential Health Committee.

In a surprise move, Member of Knesset Avraham Betzalel of the Shas party announced his resignation on Wednesday, citing the need to ensure the continued leadership of MK Yonatan Mishriki at the helm of the Knesset Health Committee.
Betzalel, who was placed 11th on the Shas party list in the most recent election, made way for Mishriki, who was 12th, to re-enter the Knesset and continue chairing the influential committee.
In a public statement, Betzalel said his decision came following the directive of the Council of Torah Sages, which had instructed Shas ministers to resign from the government. “Out of full commitment to the guidance of our Torah leaders, and recognizing the critical role the Health Committee plays in serving the most vulnerable members of society, I have decided to resign from the Knesset to allow my dear colleague MK Yonatan Mishriki to continue his successful leadership,” the statement read.
Betzalel also expressed gratitude to Shas party leader Rabbi Aryeh Deri for his trust and support, adding, “Our public service mission continues with full faith in the Torah's guidance and for the benefit of all of Israel.”
