Two Negev residents, Zaher Abu Rakeik and Imad Hawashla, were arrested last month on suspicion of smuggling pistols across the Sinai border, authorities announced today.

The arrests were part of a joint operation by the Israel Security Agency (ISA/ Shin Bet) and Israel Police. The investigation revealed their alleged involvement in the smuggling of eight pistols and magazines in October. The operation was thwarted by the IDF, which intercepted a drone being used to transport the weapons.

Further investigation uncovered additional firearms in the suspects’ possession, including a MAG machine gun and an M16 rifle. Authorities suspect their involvement in other arms smuggling operations at the border.

Today, the Southern District Prosecutor’s Office filed an indictment against the two, citing serious offenses related to arms trafficking.

In a joint statement, the Israel Police and Shin Bet emphasized their zero tolerance for Israeli citizens aiding terrorist activities, including the smuggling of weapons into Israeli territory.
