This refers to joint sanctions by European economies against Iran, sanctions that greatly affected Iran and were part of the previous nuclear agreement until they were stopped in 2015.

This is not the first time Merz has spoken against Iran. About a month ago during Operation "Iron Swords," he called on Tehran to surrender and return to contacts on a nuclear agreement. In his remarks, he warned that if Iran doesn't do so - the Iranian nuclear program will be destroyed. "If Iran doesn't surrender - complete destruction of its nuclear program will be on the table," Merz said in an interview with ZDF network. "This is something Israel cannot do alone."

Merz was also asked whether Europe will maintain its offer for diplomatic assistance in talks between the US and Iran, if those resume - as it offered to do before the Israeli attacks began. According to the Chancellor, "If a new reality is created, Germany, France and Britain will be ready again to provide diplomatic assistance - as they did until last Thursday."

"The Iranian regime has been greatly weakened, and apparently will not return to its previous strength - which makes the country's future uncertain," Merz concluded. "We will have to wait and see."
