China held a massive military parade last night (between Tuesday and Wednesday Israel time) to mark 80 years since the end of World War II, in an event designed to be a show of force by the Chinese military. US President Donald Trump responded to China's president in a post on his TruthSocial account, writing sarcastically: "Give my warm regards to Putin and Kim when you plot together against the US."

The official parade was held to mark 80 years since Japan's surrender and the end of World War II, but in the West they are following the events closely, and this parade is far from being just a historical tribute. This is a carefully orchestrated display of power - military, political and diplomatic, aimed not only at Chinese citizens, but also and primarily at Western countries.

The largest military parade in the country's history was held in Tiananmen Square, featuring advanced weapons, including intercontinental ballistic missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads, modern tanks and advanced drones, which emphasized the impressive modernization of the People's Liberation Army (PLA), as reported by Reuters.

One of the parade's highlights was the unveiling of a new YJ-17 hypersonic missile capable of flying at Mach 8 speeds - eight times the speed of sound, with a range of 1,200 km and a warhead weighing up to 500 kg. China also displayed the YJ-15, YJ-19 and YJ-20 models - all supersonic missiles with advanced penetration capabilities, some adapted for launch from naval or airborne platforms.

Additionally, the parade included a display of tanks with autonomous turrets, unmanned armored vehicles, attack drones, electronic warfare systems, next-generation robotic vessels, and directed energy weapons (laser energy).

Many new types of weapons were also on display, including drones, unmanned submarines, specially mobile vehicles equipped with laser weapons and anti-torpedo submarine equipment, all revealed publicly for the first time.

China's president, in an open limousine, reviewed the forces, while helicopters carried giant flags and fighter jets flew in formation overhead, in a 70-minute display full of symbolism and propaganda, which ended with the release of 80,000 peace doves and colorful balloons.

Xi Jinping, dressed in a Mao Zedong-style suit, received more than 20 leaders on the red carpet. Xi Jinping repeatedly chatted with Putin and Kim in the viewing stand, while 50,000 participants watched the display.

Xi Jinping warned in his speech to those present that "humanity faces a choice between peace or war, dialogue or confrontation, win-win or zero-sum," and emphasized that China "stands on the right side of history."

China's president described World War II as a turning point in "the renewal of the Chinese nation," and presented at a regional summit a vision for a new world order against "hegemony and power politics" - targeting Trump.

This week more than 20 leaders from around the world arrived in China. Among the leaders who came to the country are Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Alongside Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Myanmar's military junta leader Min Aung Hlaing.

Also Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, Turkish President Erdogan, Egyptian President al-Sisi and dozens of other leaders will participate. The only leader who could perhaps be said to be among Western leaders participating is Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, a member of the European Union and NATO.

Last night, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un also arrived in China. Kim arrived in Beijing by armored train, together with his daughter Kim Ju Ae. Kim, in his first multilateral appearance, became the first North Korean to participate in a Chinese military parade in 66 years, and came with his daughter Ju Ae, nominated as his successor by South Korean intelligence, but she was not seen in the parade.
