Robert Francis Prevost, an American born and educated cardinal from Peru, has been chosen as the new Pope by 133 Cardinals. He will take on the name Pope Leo XIV.

Prevost will be the first Pope to have been born and raised in the United States of America, with his predecessor Pope Francis having been the first Pope chosen from the Western Hemisphere.

President Donald Trump posted the following statement on his TruthSocial account in honor of the event:

"Congratulations to Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who was just named Pope. It is such an honor to realize that he is the first American Pope. What excitement, and what a Great Honor for our Country. I look forward to meeting Pope Leo XIV. It will be a very meaningful moment!"
