A Miami-Dade mother has filed a lawsuit against two major online platforms, Roblox and Discord, alleging that their design and safety measures enabled a predator to groom and sexually assault her 11-year-old daughter.

According to the suit, the child first encountered the adult online while using Roblox, a platform marketed as a safe gaming site for children, and Discord, a social messaging app. The predator allegedly used interactions on both apps to establish a relationship with the girl, ultimately resulting in rape. The adult has since been sentenced to 60 years in prison.

Attorney Stanley Gipe, representing the mother, told Local 10 News: “Roblox gives pedophiles a platform to look like a 12-year-old girl. This pedophile created a strong bond with this girl and it changed her life forever.”

The lawsuit claims both platforms were negligently designed, failed to provide adequate safety warnings, and misled parents with statements promoting child security.

“Pedophiles find this to be a fertile hunting ground and they will come on here all day long,” Gipe said.

Roblox and Discord now face multiple lawsuits across the country alleging child exploitation and grooming. In response, Roblox recently implemented facial age estimation technology to verify users aged 13 and older, a measure Gipe calls “too little, too late.”

“They may have done something to prevent harm in the future. It doesn’t excuse all the harm that’s been done in the past,” he said.

Florida’s attorney general launched an investigation into Roblox earlier this year to determine whether the platform is exposing minors to harmful content and predators.

This case highlights growing concerns among parents and lawmakers about the safety of children on social platforms and gaming apps, and the ongoing debate over tech companies’ responsibility to protect young users online.
