A major data breach in the United Kingdom has exposed the identities of thousands of Afghan nationals who assisted British forces during the war against the Taliban. Following the leak, which reportedly revealed sensitive personal information to the Taliban, the UK was forced to initiate a large-scale operation to bring the affected individuals to British soil for their safety.

According to reports published today, the breach compromised the details of at least 19,000 Afghans, including names, contact information, and family data—information that could be exploited by the Taliban, which has since regained control of Afghanistan. The revelation prompted immediate action by British authorities to extract and resettle the at-risk individuals.

UK Defence Secretary commented on the situation Wednesday, acknowledging the seriousness of the breach and stating that he could not confirm that none of those affected had been harmed as a result.

The operation has been conducted under strict secrecy, with the breach itself only coming to light recently. According to the report, it took nearly two years for British authorities to even become aware of the leak, which occurred in February 2022 but was not discovered until August 2023.

So far, approximately 4,500 Afghans have been relocated to the UK as part of the covert mission. The UK government estimates the initial cost of the relocation effort at £400 million, with total expenses potentially reaching £800 million by the conclusion of the operation. Over 6,900 individuals are expected to be resettled under the program.

The breach reportedly occurred when a government official mistakenly sent a sensitive distribution list to an unauthorized email address, rather than another secure government account. Despite the gravity of the incident, police investigations have so far found no evidence of deliberate intent to compromise national security.
