A knife-wielding attacker shouting Islamist slogans went on a stabbing spree in Marseille, France, injuring five people before being shot dead by police.

According to Marseille police, the incident began around 2:45 p.m., when a 35-year-old Tunisian national was evicted from a local hotel due to unpaid debts. Armed with two large knives and an iron bar, he attacked the hotel manager and his son, both of whom sustained serious injuries.

The attacker then moved into the street, where he randomly assaulted three more passersby, lightly injuring them, while shouting “Allahu Akbar.” He also attempted to attack the manager of a nearby kebab restaurant.

Eyewitnesses described the rampage as “blind and indiscriminate,” and video from the scene showed chaos as public transport was briefly halted and the area secured by authorities.

Police officers initially tried to subdue the assailant with a taser, but when he advanced toward them with a knife, they were forced to open fire, killing him on the spot.

Two victims, the hotel manager and his son, remain in serious condition.

Three others sustained minor injuries.

Authorities identified the attacker as a Tunisian citizen who was legally residing in France. He was known to police for previous criminal offenses, though not for terrorism-related activities. At the time of the incident, he was under judicial supervision and subject to a weapons ban.
