Following last week's hostile protests against Israeli tourists in the Greek island of Syros, officials in Rhodes are preparing a warm welcome for the Crown Iris cruise ship operated by Israeli company Mano Maritime.

The vessel, carrying approximately 1,800 Israeli passengers, is scheduled to dock at 15:30 local time. According to the company, Greek authorities and local organizations are planning a ceremonial reception in appreciation for Mano Maritime’s longstanding contributions to Greek tourism and the economy.

Company chairman Moshe Mano reportedly worked over the past few days with senior Greek officials and diplomats - including Greece’s ambassador to Israel and Israel’s ambassador to Greece, Noam Katz - to ensure a smooth and respectful docking experience throughout the summer season.

In response to the chaotic scenes in Syros, where pro-Palestinian activists blocked Israeli passengers from disembarking, the Greek government has announced it will deploy special police units to Rhodes and Crete to prevent similar incidents.

Greek Minister of Citizen Protection Michalis Chrisochoidis criticized the handling of last week's protest, saying the Syros prosecutor should have charged the demonstrators. He promised that going forward, Greek police will act swiftly under anti-racism laws if similar disruptions occur.

Last week’s incident in Syros saw hundreds of Israeli passengers trapped onboard as demonstrators waved Palestinian flags and accused Israel of "genocide in Gaza." In response, Israeli tourists sang and waved Israeli flags from the deck. The vessel ultimately skipped Syros and sailed to Limassol, Cyprus, to avoid further conflict.

Now, with security reinforcements and diplomatic coordination, Rhodes is signaling that Israeli tourists are welcome - and protected.
