A disturbing scene unfolded at a gas station in Italy this week when a Jewish father and his young son from France were accosted by strangers shouting anti-Israel slogans. The incident, captured on video and widely circulated online, has reignited concerns about rising antisemitism across Europe. They were just trying to use the toilet.

The confrontation began when the child, wearing a kippah was spotted by passersby. Within moments, the pair was bombarded with shouts of “Free Palestine” and “murderers.” The boy appeared shaken and visibly distressed, while his father, standing firm, responded by shouting “Am Yisrael Chai” (“The people of Israel live”). In sequence, the father was pushed into the floor, beaten and had his glasses broaken by the harassers. In the meanwhile, his son was pushed aside and protected by a pedestrian who tried to shield him from the chaos.

The video of the incident has gone viral, triggering widespread condemnation and renewed calls for governments to take a stronger stand against antisemitic abuse. Activists, Jewish leaders, and members of the public alike expressed deep concern over what they view as a worrying escalation in hostility toward Jews in Europe.

“A Jewish man stops for gas in Italy and is harassed just because his child wore a kippah,” wrote Yossi Spitezki, a French Jewish advocate. “He’s French. He has no connection to Israel.”

The harassment was denounced by Voix Juive, a French Jewish media outlet that shared the footage, prompting thousands of responses. Some expressed solidarity, others called for accountability, and a few used the moment to criticize Israeli policy, revealing the polarizing nature of such public incidents.

One user, identifying as Dido, summed up the fears many feel:

“I’m not Jewish, but I know history. It starts with identification… then symbols… then deportations. We know where this ends. It’s time to act before it’s too late.”

The gas station incident comes amid a troubling surge in antisemitic attacks across the continent. Jewish communities in several European countries report increasing harassment, often tied to heightened tensions in the Middle East and the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. Community leaders warn that visibly Jewish individuals, including children, are increasingly being singled out and targeted.

As the video continues to circulate, many online are asking the same haunting question: Where does this lead if left unchecked? And perhaps more urgently, how long will the world wait to say ‘never again’ before acting?
