A wave of sorrow has swept through the world of soccer following the death of Liverpool and Portugal national team striker Diogo Jota during a car accident in Spain after his vehicle veered off the road and caught fire.

Jota was just 28 years old. He is survived by his wife and three children.

The tragic accident occurred late Wednesday night into Thursday, near the city of Zamora, close to the Spain-Portugal border. Jota was reportedly traveling with his brother André when their Lamborghini suffered a tire blowout while attempting to overtake another vehicle. The car crashed and burst into flames at around 12:30 AM. Both Jota and his brother were in the car and did not survive.

According to Spanish daily Marca, eyewitnesses called for help after seeing the vehicle engulfed in flames.

Jota, born in Porto, began his professional career at Paços de Ferreira, later moving to Atlético Madrid, then Porto, and eventually Wolverhampton Wanderers before joining Liverpool in 2020.

He recently celebrated winning the Premier League with Liverpool, having also lifted the FA Cup and the EFL Cup with the Reds.

Jota had only just married last week and leaves behind a young family, including three children, the youngest of whom was born last November.

The Portuguese international was loved by teammates and fans alike.

Known for his sharp goal-scoring instincts, he scored 65 goals in 182 appearances for Liverpool, including several iconic goals: a derby winner against Everton (his last goal), a brace against Arsenal, and a crucial strike against Atlético Madrid in the Champions League.

Jota was also a beloved figure off the pitch - a popular presence in the locker room and among fans.

In one of Liverpool’s final home games of the season, he was filmed in tears as supporters sang his chant. He was also a top-ranked gamer and, at one point, held the title of best FIFA player among professional soccer playes. He had been named Premier League Player of the Month during his career.

Soccer has lost not only a talented striker but a deeply cherished member of the global sporting community.
