The IDF carried out an airstrike earlier today (Monday) targeting several Syrian regime tanks moving toward the al-Suwayda region in southern Syria—roughly 50 kilometers from Israeli territory.

According to the IDF spokesperson, the tanks were identified traveling between al-Sijin and Sama, and were struck “to disrupt their arrival in the area.” The statement warned that "the presence of such military assets in southern Syria poses a potential threat to the State of Israel. The IDF will not allow any military threat to develop near its northern frontier."

Israeli military policy maintains that southern Syria must remain demilitarized of Syrian army weaponry. As reported by military correspondent Doron Kadosh of IDF Radio, the tanks were perceived as part of a possible future threat and were therefore preemptively targeted.

Furthermore, the tanks were en route to al-Suwayda, a region predominantly controlled by the Druze community. Recently, the new Syrian regime under Ahmad al-Shara (also known as al-Julani) launched an offensive against the local Druze population, alongside allied militias. By striking the tanks, Israel effectively disrupted a planned assault on the Druze.

Israel has repeatedly pledged to defend the Druze in Syria from aggression—this strike may be seen as a fulfillment of that commitment.
