From Live Action to Animation: Barbie's Next Big Move
Illumination Entertainment partners with Mattel to create the first-ever theatrical animated Barbie movie, marking a historic collaboration in family entertainment.
Following the record-breaking success of Barbie (2023), which grossed over $1.4 billion globally and became the highest-grossing film ever directed by a woman, Barbie is ready to return to the big screen. But this time, in animated form addapted to theaters.
Illumination, the animation powerhouse behind global hits like Minions and The Super Mario Bros. Movie, is officially partnering with Mattel Studios to develop the first-ever Barbie animated feature for theaters. The announcement, confirmed last week, marks a new chapter in the doll’s cinematic evolution, just two years after Greta Gerwig’s live-action interpretation became a pop culture phenomenon.
While a release date has yet to be confirmed, sources at Deadline report that Universal Pictures, Illumination’s exclusive partner for financing and distribution, will handle the theatrical rollout.
Plot details remain under wraps, but expectations are high. The film aims to expand Barbie’s legacy into a new creative space, blending Illumination’s family-friendly animation style with the timeless appeal of Mattel’s iconic brand.

A Legacy Reimagined
Barbie has remained a cultural fixture since her 1959 debut, with more than 100 dolls sold every minute around the world. While previous animated Barbie films have been released direct-to-video or on streaming platforms, this will be the first time she takes center stage in a theatrically released animated feature.
The animated project also reflects Mattel’s broader strategic vision. In 2023, the company consolidated its film and television divisions into Mattel Studios, which is now aggressively developing film adaptations of its most recognizable properties, including Hot Wheels, Polly Pocket, and Masters of the Universe.
As Barbie prepares for her animated debut on the big screen, one thing is clear: the doll that shaped generations of childhoods is far from done reinventing herself.
Stay tuned: Barbie’s next big adventure is just getting started.
