Israel enters the 78th day of the war. IDF Spokesperson Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari issued a statement to the press, addressing the fighting in Gaza.

During his statement, he said “over the weekend, we expanded the ground activity of forces in the south and north of the Strip. The fighting forces are conducting fierce battles upon entering the new Hamas bastions. I was with the Chief of Staff today in Khan Yunis and met with the soldiers, where they went over their actions on the ground, the challenges and progress in fighting.”

“I want to explain how fighting looks like on the ground,” Hagari said. “An area like Khan Yunis is a dense area and we are working powerfully there underground. The division is fighting there with a larger number of fighters. We have not a few terrorists who come up from the tunnels, they fire an RPG, hide bombs, and we kill them. There are many targets which we can’t attack from the air and need to enter.”

He also said that “so far, our soldiers have confiscated 30,000 bombs. Many weapons – rockets, missiles, explosive devices. Some were found within schools. Not a few soldiers are surrendering in this fighting. They are being interrogated and we thus find a great deal of information on many places and thus we improve our achievements in the war. There are very many terrorists killed every day in the war. We are striking them but this is an action which will yet take time.”

“I want to send my condolences to the families of soldiers who were killed in Gaza. We are with you in this difficult hour. This action has a heavy price. The military pressure concentrates together with the effort to return the hostages which is being conducted with very great determination.”
