Turkey’s Transport and Infrastructure Minister, Abdulqadir Uraloğlu, became an unexpected viral sensation this week after posting a video in which he is seen driving at a shocking speed of 225 km/h on a major highway — almost double the country’s legal maximum speed limit.

The video, accompanied by traditional Turkish music and excerpts from a speech by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan praising national infrastructure projects, shows the minister’s speedometer climbing rapidly as his car overtakes vehicles on the Ankara–Niğde highway.

Public Outrage on Social Media

The footage quickly spread across social media, sparking outrage. Many users condemned the minister for recklessness and accused him of failing to set an example as a public official. Critics highlighted the irresponsibility of boasting about such behavior in a country where road accidents claim thousands of lives annually.

Police Action and Fine

Traffic police responded swiftly, fining Uraloğlu 9,267 lira (about $280) for the offense, which occurred roughly 50 km outside Ankara. Facing mounting criticism, the minister posted a picture of the fine on X (formerly Twitter) along with a short message: “I apologize to our nation.”

The Broader Context

Turkey’s official speed limit on highways is 140 km/h. According to government statistics, road accidents remain a severe issue in the country. Just last year, 6,351 people were killed in nearly 1.5 million traffic accidents, underscoring the dangerous recklessness of the minister’s high-speed stunt.
