Only about 5,000 Gazans out of more than a million have evacuated south in the past week, despite repeated Israeli military warnings and efforts to provide safe zones. The low numbers highlight the challenges facing the IDF as it prepares to expand operations in Gaza City.

Yesterday (Wednesday), IDF Arabic spokesman Col. Avichay Adraee released a statement identifying open areas in southern Gaza suitable for displaced civilians, underscoring Israel’s intent to deepen military action in Gaza City. Hamas immediately tried to frame the announcement as “psychological warfare” and “deception.”

Hamas Strategy: Block Evacuations, Exploit Civilians

Hamas propaganda instructs civilians to stay put, portraying Israel’s evacuation notices as “tricks” designed to force Gazans into Israeli fire zones. Their objectives are clear:

Voices of Anger Inside Gaza

The IDF’s latest message sparked fierce debate online in Gaza. Some residents openly criticized Hamas for sacrificing civilians:

“Why does Hamas want to exhaust the people when they can’t even provide food or income? Only corrupt elites profit while ordinary families starve.”

Others expressed despair at the skyrocketing costs of displacement. Families report tents costing $1,000–$2,000, unaffordable for most.

Meanwhile, hardline voices call for staying put at any cost:

“Tell them there’s plenty of land in the north for us. We won’t go south—we’ll die here first.”

“Everyone knows Hamas betrayed us. We warned people long ago what their project is, but they wouldn’t listen until now.”

Another Gazan added:

“We all know Israel wants to destroy us whether north or south. People are tired of displacement; they prefer death over humiliation.”

Israel Provides Options, Hamas Blocks Them

Col. Adraee stressed that “evacuation of Gaza City is inevitable” and highlighted empty areas in central and southern Gaza — Al-Mawasi, Deir al-Balah, and others — where the IDF is already setting up humanitarian hubs, water pipelines, and tent facilities. Israel is working to ensure displaced families receive food and shelter.

But Hamas’s refusal to let civilians leave exposes its true priorities: maintaining power, preserving its human shields, and sabotaging any effort to relieve suffering.

The IDF faces a dual challenge: conducting its military mission to dismantle Hamas’s terror infrastructure while also trying to protect civilians that Hamas deliberately keeps in harm’s way. Israel is providing humanitarian alternatives; Hamas is doing everything possible to block them.
