TEHRAN An Iranian military helicopter reportedly approached a US Navy destroyer and nearly opened fire in what Tehran is calling a response to an American “provocation” near its territorial waters.

According to Iranian media, the incident took place earlier today as the USS Fitzgerald, a guided missile destroyer, maneuvered close to waters under Iranian surveillance. Iranian forces claim the American ship was warned to retreat, and that the helicopter issued a "severe warning" before the vessel changed course.

Iranian reports say the US ship initially responded with threats, but eventually withdrew due to a "persistent threat" from Iranian forces.

Conflicting reports have emerged, with some outlets suggesting warning shots may have been fired. These claims have not been independently verified.

CENTCOM, the United States Central Command responsible for the region, declined to comment on the reported confrontation. Meanwhile, Iranian state media framed the incident as a military victory, claiming they “forced” an American warship out of the area.

“The Fitzgerald attempted to approach Iranian-controlled waters in a provocative step,” stated Iran’s state TV. “A navy helicopter closed in rapidly and issued a sharp warning to leave.”

While no official American confirmation has been issued, the incident marks yet another flashpoint in the already volatile waters of the Gulf, as tensions between the US and Iran continue to rise.
