The Israeli government has released harrowing security camera footage depicting Hamas terrorrists murdering Gil Ta'assa, a 47-year-old father, in front of his two young sons during the October 7, 2023, attack on southern Israel.

In the footage, Ta'assa is seen shielding his sons, Shai (aged 8) and Koren (aged 12), from a grenade thrown by the attackers. He jumps on the explosive device, absorbing the blast and sacrificing his life to protect the children, who were nonetheless severely injured. The terrorists then enter the family's home, where one casually rummages through the refrigerator and takes a drink while the wounded boys plead for help. The children survived the ordeal but sustained life-altering injuries, including shrapnel wounds and psychological trauma.

Research analyst Joe Truzman, who shared the video on X (formerly Twitter), identified one of the perpetrators as Ahmed Fawzi al-Wadiyya, a commander of a Hamas Nukhba elite unit involved in the invasion. According to Truzman, al-Wadiyya was killed by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) in an airstrike nearly a year ago. This identification aligns with earlier reports of IDF operations targeting Hamas operatives featured in October 7 videos.

The release comes amid ongoing efforts by Israeli authorities to document and publicize the atrocities committed during the attack, which saw over 1,200 Israelis killed and around 250 taken hostage, according to official tallies. Sabine Ta'assa, Gil's widow, approved the sharing of the footage as part of a public diplomacy initiative to counter denial of the events. Tragically, the family suffered further loss that day: Ta'assa's eldest son, Or (17), was murdered separately by Hamas terrorists in Kibbutz Nahal Oz.

The video has circulated widely on social media, eliciting strong reactions. Users described it as a "stark reminder of the horrific violence" and urged global awareness of the attack's brutality. Some posts emphasized Ta'assa's heroism, noting how he fired at the intruders until out of ammunition before the fatal grenade assault.

This release is part of a broader pattern of Israel declassifying materials from October 7, including bodycam videos and survivor testimonies, to underscore the scale of the Hamas-led assault, which Human Rights Watch has described as involving crimes against humanity and war crimes. The IDF continues operations in Gaza, with recent strikes targeting remaining Hamas figures tied to the attack.

Israeli officials have not commented further on the timing of this specific release, but it coincides with heightened international scrutiny of the ongoing conflict.
