The Israel Defense Forces' (IDF) 36th Division has wrapped up a months-long campaign in the southern Gaza city of Khan Yunis, announcing the destruction of extensive Hamas tunnel systems and terror infrastructure. The military stated that the division is now preparing for future assignments.

The operation, which lasted for several months, saw forces from the Golani, 188th, and 900th brigades work to establish a strategic corridor, the Magen Oz corridor, cutting across the city from west to east.

Dismantling Hamas's Underground City

Working in conjunction with the elite Yahalom Unit, IDF troops reportedly dismantled dozens of kilometers of underground tunnels. The IDF said these networks were used by Hamas not only for operational purposes but also as living quarters.

The campaign also focused on destroying hundreds of terrorist infrastructure sites, including weapons depots and other assets belonging to militant groups. According to the military, the operation resulted in the killing of hundreds of militants, including some who participated in the October 7, 2023 attacks. The IDF's 282nd Brigade provided close fire support, using coordinated aerial and artillery strikes to assist ground forces.

Recent IDF Operations in Gaza

The announcement from Khan Yunis follows a series of other major operations across the Gaza Strip. In recent weeks, IDF troops have conducted extensive activity around Gaza City and Zeitoun.

Earlier this month, the military reported the destruction of a Hamas tunnel shaft in Zeitoun, which was part of a broader underground network. Simultaneously, Israeli forces targeted and struck several high-rise buildings in Gaza City, which the military claimed were being used as observation posts and operational hubs by Hamas and other militant groups.

The IDF also confirmed the deaths of senior Hamas and Islamic Jihad militants through targeted strikes and coordinated ground operations. Prior to these actions, the military had reportedly dropped leaflets and sent recorded warnings urging residents to evacuate.

The Israeli military has also been preparing for a potential large-scale mobilization of reservists to reinforce ongoing ground operations.
