Jeffrey Epstein’s longtime confidante and partner, Ghislaine Maxwell, has told US investigators she does not believe the disgraced financier and convicted sex offender died by suicide in his Manhattan jail cell.

Maxwell, who is serving a 20-year sentence for trafficking women and one minor to Epstein, was questioned by the Department of Justice last month amid renewed scrutiny of the case. A transcript released Friday quotes her as saying: “I do not believe he died by suicide, no.”

She dismissed theories that Epstein was killed on orders from outside figures but suggested the possibility of an “internal situation” if foul play was involved. Asked whether Epstein might have been silenced to protect powerful individuals, Maxwell said she found that idea “ludicrous,” adding that if anyone wanted him dead, “they would’ve had plenty of opportunity when he wasn’t in jail.”

Maxwell also rejected claims that Epstein kept a “client list” or engaged in blackmail.

Epstein was found dead in August 2019 while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges, with the official ruling citing suicide by hanging. The case has fueled years of speculation regarding a cover-up and the true circumstances of his death.
