The Trump administration announced on Thursday a sweeping review of more than 55 million valid U.S. visas, aiming to identify violations that could result in cancellations and deportations.

In a response to the Associated Press, the State Department emphasized that “all visa holders, including tourists from various countries, are under continuous monitoring.” If new information surfaces suggesting ineligibility, the visa can be revoked and the individual may face removal proceedings.

At the same time, Secretary of State Marco Rubio declared on social media that the U.S. will immediately halt issuing work visas for foreign truck drivers.

He argued that the rising number of foreign heavy-truck operators poses safety risks and undermines American truckers’ livelihoods. No official data was provided on how many foreign drivers are currently working in the U.S.

Since Trump entered the White House, immigration policy has centered on removing undocumented residents and revoking visas for students and exchange program participants. The latest statement suggests the screening process has been expanded dramatically, even those previously cleared for long-term stays could suddenly lose their legal status.

According to the State Department, disqualifying criteria include overstaying visas, criminal activity, threats to public safety, terrorist involvement, or providing support to terror groups. Officials noted that checks will draw on police records, immigration data, and newly available information, including social media activity. Applicants are also asked to disable privacy settings on phones and apps during consular interviews.

The tightening has already produced sharp results: visa cancellations have more than doubled compared with last year, with student visas making up nearly four times the share of revocations.
