U.S. CENTCOM Commander Kurilla Wraps Up Tenure After Key Role in Israel Operations
General Michael Kurilla has stepped down as CENTCOM Commander, with IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir praising his significant contributions to Israel’s security during a farewell visit. Kurilla’s leadership bolstered U.S.-Israel military cooperation, particularly during the “Swords of Iron” War and Operation “Rising Lion.”

General Michael Erik Kurilla, Commander of the United States Central Command (CENTCOM), concluded his tenure over the weekend of August 9-10, 2025, marking the end of a significant chapter in U.S.-Israel military cooperation. As part of his farewell, Kurilla visited Israel weeks ago as the official guest of IDF Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir, who lauded his contributions to Israel’s security and regional stability.
During the visit, Zamir expressed deep gratitude for Kurilla’s leadership, particularly during the “Swords of Iron” War and Operation “Rising Lion,” which yielded notable operational successes. “The IDF views its relationship with the United States military to be strategically important, providing an operational advantage in the Middle East,” the IDF stated, underscoring the critical alliance. Zamir praised Kurilla personally, saying, “You are a true friend of Israel. Your leadership in advancing joint operations has not only strengthened the bond between our two nations and led to a lasting personal friendship, but also laid the foundation for a safer and more secure future for our children and grandchildren.”
Kurilla’s three-year tenure as CENTCOM commander was marked by enhanced U.S. military support for Israel, especially during the ongoing conflict with Hamas and other regional threats. Zamir highlighted Kurilla’s role, stating, “Over the past three years as the commander of CENTCOM, and from the beginning of the ‘Swords of Iron’ war through to operation ‘Rising Lion’, you have advanced American military support for Israel and reinforced regional cooperation. Your direct involvement has significantly enhanced Israel’s security and regional stability.” The partnership has been vital amid escalating tensions, including Iran’s threats and Hamas’s diversion of humanitarian aid, as reported recently.
Kurilla’s departure comes at a pivotal moment, with Israel preparing for a complex Gaza City operation and facing regional challenges. His legacy includes strengthened U.S.-Israel military ties, fostering a robust framework for future cooperation in a volatile region.
