A strong earthquake struck the Kuril Islands in eastern Russia on Monday morning, marking the second significant seismic event in the region within a month. According to the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ), the earthquake registered a magnitude of 6.3 on the Richter scale, with its epicenter located 10 kilometers below the seabed, approximately 125 kilometers southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.

Local authorities reported several minor injuries and significant damage to buildings in the affected area, prompting the evacuation of thousands of residents.

This follows an earlier major quake on July 30, which measured 8.8 on the Richter scale and struck the Kamchatka Peninsula. That event generated tsunami waves up to four meters high, triggering tsunami warnings across multiple countries including Japan, the Philippines, New Zealand, and the U.S. West Coast.

The recent tremor underscores the ongoing seismic activity in Russia’s Far East, raising concerns about infrastructure resilience and disaster preparedness in the region.
